Rock Paths, Hilltop Shrines and Borderland Waters

Kunnampidari rises above Kozhinjampara as a dark ridge of granite set within coconut groves and rain-fed ponds. The shoreline below is quiet, with tall palmyra trees standing alone in the water and wide stretches of green pushing outward in every direction. The climb begins near a small Ganesha shrine at what locals call the sixth mile. From there a stepped path leads upward until stone gives way to exposed rock and narrow turns.

Near the crest sits a modest Shiva temple that stays peaceful most days, with regular worship on Fridays. Beyond this point the hill opens into clear air and views that carry far across the Palakkad Gap. The Walayar hills mark one edge of the horizon while the Nelliampathy range shapes the other. On especially bright days the outlines of Coimbatore and Pollachi appear in the distance along with glimpses of plantation country near Kollengode and Muthalamada.

Occasionally the hill comes alive with the presence of traditional performance. To certain lucky travellers, a small group of theyyam artists may appear in colourful headgear and painted masks, moving in rhythm with drumbeats that seem to echo over the rock. These moments leave a sense of connection with the people who have lived around this ridge for generations.

Old granite quarries near Kozhinjampara have slowly filled with water, forming ponds tucked between rock walls and clusters of green. After descending the trail, narrow paths lead to the Mani check dam where palmyra palms stand over meadows that stay fresh through the rains. In monsoon months red water lilies open across the shallow pools at the base of the hill, creating a final image of stillness and colour before the return journey.

Kunnampidari is a simple borderland trek with far-reaching views and a quiet spiritual feel, suited to travellers who enjoy slow walking, open countryside and the meeting of rock, water and local culture.
