Set within the elevated forest belt of Ernakulam district, Mamalakandam is a quiet mountain village located about 32 kilometres from Kothamangalam at roughly 500 metres above sea level. Wrapped in mist for much of the year, this hamlet gained widespread attention when visuals of a government high school, backed dramatically by the cascading Elamplassery Waterfall, began circulating across social media. The sight of classrooms framed by falling water and distant peaks transformed the village into an unexpected icon of Kerala’s high ranges.

Yet Mamalakandam’s character extends far beyond its now-famous school. The approach itself, particularly along the Kothamangalam–Thattekkad stretch, moves through winding forest roads where low clouds drift across hill slopes and narrow side paths open toward hidden streams. The terrain invites trekking, quiet nature walks, and exploratory drives through dense green corridors filled with butterflies and forest life.

Wildlife presence remains part of the region’s living landscape. Jungle trails echo with the sounds of elephants moving through the undergrowth, while sightings of bison, squirrels, and birdlife are not uncommon. For adventure seekers, off-road tracks climb toward elevated viewpoints offering uninterrupted vistas of layered hills and valleys below. Close to Mamalakandam lies the Inchathotty Suspension Bridge across the Periyar River, adding another scenic stop to the journey. Local flavours such as mulayari payasam, prepared from bamboo rice, complement the rural experience.
