Unniyal Beach in Tirur has a character of its own. Here, the sea runs parallel to a narrow coastal road, separated by a bright stretch of painted seawall. The colours along the wall stand out against the blue water and pale sky, while coconut palms lean slightly towards the shore, shaped by years of coastal wind.

As evening approaches, this stretch slowly fills with people. Families come for a walk, children run along the tiled pathway, and small groups gather to sit facing the sea. The waves roll in at a steady pace, and the breeze carries the familiar scent of salt and sand. It is not a hurried place. The rhythm here feels simple and unforced.

The beach itself extends for over a kilometre, making it one of the longer coastal stretches near Tirur. The motorable road alongside allows visitors to pause, step out and spend time by the shore without difficulty. Local fishermen continue their routines nearby, and small eateries along the route serve fresh seafood and everyday Kerala dishes.

Unniyal is located about 5.5 kilometres from Tirur town along the Koottayi coastal road. Those travelling from Kozhikode can reach it directly through Tanur, without entering the town centre. It is also close to Tirur Railway Station, known as Kerala’s first railway station, which makes access easy for visitors arriving by train.

Close to Unniyal lies Padinjarekkara Beach and the Koottayi Estuary, where the inland waters meet the sea. Together, they form a coastal belt that reflects the everyday life of Malappuram’s shoreline with open skies, working boats, evening walkers and the constant presence of the Arabian Sea.
