Dr. Pramod Payyanur is a leading figure in contemporary Malayalam theatre, cinema, and stage
productions. A graduate in Malayalam Literature, he went on to earn his BA in Drama Direction
with first rank from the School of Drama, an MA in Professional Arts from Pondicherry
University, and a PhD on Tagore in Global Theatre. Known for his experimental approach, he
first gained attention by staging M.T. Vasudevan Nair’s Iruttinte Aathmavu in a sandwich stage
format during his student days.
Pramod has directed adaptations of works by writers including Basheer, O.V. Vijayan,
Padmarajan, Chekhov, Camus, and Shakespeare, earning acclaim for his ability to bring
literature vividly to the stage. His film debut Balyakaalasakhi, starring Mammootty, was
celebrated in festivals and won several awards. His multimedia productions—such as
Randamoozham, Nanmayude Apaara Theeram, and Pravasa Malayalam—explore Kerala’s
cultural history and social imagination.
Currently serving as Member Secretary of Bharat Bhavan, the cultural exchange centre of the
Government of Kerala, Pramod has pioneered projects blending art, culture, and social
engagement. His contributions have won him multiple state drama awards, a Guinness World
Record for Viswaguru, and recognition as a Socio-Cultural Youth Icon.
