These rousing beats are of the Pancharimelam, an orchestration of the chenda (drum) which is an essential component of almost all the major festivals of Kerala. The instruments for the pancharimelam consist of the chenda, kombu, kuzhal and cymbals. A performance includes five stages or kaalams with the beats rising in a crescendo. This piece is the final stage or climax, considered to be the best part of the melam.
