Canals, Boat Races and Coastal Rhythms

Kandassankadavu is a quiet coastal village about 17 kilometres from Thrissur town, known for its network of canals, inland waters and long-standing Christian heritage. Often referred to as the “Land of Canals,” the village sits along the historic Conolly Canal, a waterway built during the British period that once played a major role in trade and transport across Kerala’s coast. Even today, the canal shapes the daily rhythm of the place, with narrow waterways cutting through coconut groves and opening into broader stretches of backwater.

Kandassankadavu becomes especially vibrant during the annual Kandassankadavu Boat Race, locally known as Jalolsavam. Held during the Onam season on the waters of Enamakkal Lake and the Conolly Canal, the race is both festive and deeply rooted in local tradition. Teams row powerful chundan vallams in close competition, cheered on by crowds gathered along the banks. The winning team receives the Chief Minister’s Ever-Rolling Trophy, adding prestige to an already spirited celebration. On Thiruvonam day, the final day of Onam, the atmosphere here is charged with colour, rhythm and community pride.

Beyond the boat race, the canal and lake are steady attractions throughout the year. Near the Kandassankadavu Bridge, a kayaking centre allows visitors to explore the calm waters at their own pace. The Jalavahini Boat Club operates boating services along the canal and the Kandassankadavu River, with affordable ticketed rides and pedal boating options. A tourism pavilion and small recreational park mark the finishing point of the boat race, offering shaded seating and open space by the water. These additions make the area welcoming for families as well as photography enthusiasts who want to capture reflections of coconut trees along the canal.

Kandassankadavu is well connected by road along the Vadanappally–Kanjani–Thrissur stretch. Buses run regularly from Thrissur, Guruvayoor and Kodungalloor. The coastal route also makes it easy to combine a visit here with nearby beaches such as Vadanappally, Chavakkad, Nattika and Snehatheeram. Travelling north leads toward Guruvayoor, while heading south connects to Kochi through Kodungalloor and Paravoor. With its canals, festive boat race and easy coastal access, Kandassankadavu offers a one-of-a-kind culturally rich experience in the Thrissur region.
