Kanthanpara is one of those places in Wayanad that feels simple at first glance, yet stays with you long after you leave. Located about 8 kilometres from Meppadi and 19 kilometres from Kalpetta, this waterfall lies close to the border of Mupainad Grama Panchayat. Tucked along the Vaduvanchal road, it is easily accessible from the Vythiri–Gudalur Highway, the Ooty interstate route via Thinapura, or through Meppadi from Thamarassery. Clear signboards along the way guide visitors to the final stretch leading down to the falls.

The waterfall itself descends from a height of roughly 100 feet, flowing over layered rock surfaces into a shallow pool below. During the monsoon, the cascade grows fuller and more dramatic, while in other seasons it maintains a steady, calming flow. Bamboo groves, thick foliage and the constant sound of birds create a setting that feels both lively and peaceful. Though not as large as some of Wayanad’s other waterfalls, Kanthanpara carries its own quiet charm.

The approach to the falls is part of the experience. Tea plantations stretch along sections of the path, and the surrounding forest under the South Wayanad Forest Division adds to the sense of being close to nature. Birdwatchers often visit this region hoping to spot species such as the Malabar Grey Hornbill, the White-throated Kingfisher and the White-cheeked Barbet. The combination of water, forest edge and plantation landscape makes this a biodiverse pocket within Meppadi’s hills.

The name itself is meaningful. In Malayalam, “kantha” means magnet and “para” means rock. Kanthanpara truly lives up to this name in the way it draws visitors back year after year. Families often prefer this waterfall because of its relatively shallow pool and the ease with which one can descend to the base. Visitors can step into the water with care, sit on the surrounding rocks or simply enjoy the cool mist rising from the cascade. Entry is permitted between 09:00 AM and 05:00 PM, with modest ticket charges, and parking facilities are available near the entrance.

For those planning a longer stay, Meppadi offers several homestays and small resorts. The wider region includes attractions such as Soochipara Waterfall and 900 Kandi, known for trekking trails, off-road routes and a glass bridge overlooking forested slopes. While parts of Meppadi Panchayat, including Mundakkai and Chooralmala, were affected by landslides in 2024, Kanthanpara itself lies in a safe and accessible zone.

With its manageable size, family-friendly setting and gentle forest atmosphere, Kanthanpara remains one of Wayanad’s most approachable waterfalls, where the sound of falling water blends easily with birdsong and mountain air.
