Kottappuram is located a short distance from Nileshwaram town in Kasaragod district, around twelve kilometres from Kanhangad. Positioned along the northern Kerala coastline, it serves as the primary access point to the Valiyaparamba backwaters, a vast inland water system that runs parallel to the Arabian Sea across parts of Kannur and Kasaragod districts. Because of its network of interconnected waterways and houseboat activity, the area is often referred to locally as the “Venice of the North” in the Malabar region.

Kottappuram entered the organised tourism sector in 2001 when the state-owned Bekal Resorts Development Corporation introduced its first two houseboats here. Over time, the number of vessels increased, and the location evolved into a structured backwater cruise centre. Today, the terminal supports around forty houseboats of varying sizes. As part of the State Tourism Department’s Malabar River Cruise project, a spacious houseboat terminal complex has been constructed, equipped with a cafeteria, restrooms, and parking facilities. From this terminal, visitors can undertake a backwater cruise covering approximately 30 kilometres through the Valiyaparamba waterways. Standard cruise timings usually run between 10 AM and 4 PM, with freshly prepared meals served on board.

The fleet includes large boats designed to host conferences and group gatherings of over a hundred people, as well as smaller bedroom-equipped boats suited for overnight stays. The Valiyaparamba backwaters, also known as the Kavvayi backwaters, remain navigable through most of the year, except during peak monsoon conditions when operations may be limited. For shorter visits, the Kottappuram Houseboat Terminal, operated by a private agency under lease from the District Tourism Promotion Council, offers two-hour cruise options. Speed boats and shikhara boats are currently not available at this location.

Kottappuram is accessible via the Nileshwaram Market Junction along the National Highway, from where auto-rickshaws connect directly to the terminal. Frequent bus services run between Kanhangad and Nileshwaram, ensuring regular connectivity. Visitors travelling by private vehicle from Kasaragod can approach via Cherkala, Periya, Kanhangad South, Padannakad, and Nileshwaram Market Junction, or alternatively through Bekal and Kanhangad before reaching the backwater terminal. The location functions both as a cruise embarkation point and as a structured tourism node within the northern Kerala backwater belt.

Despite its organised infrastructure and growing houseboat operations, Kottappuram continues to remain relatively less explored compared to the more established backwater destinations of central Kerala. Its quieter waterways, limited commercial crowding, and expansive stretches of the Valiyaparamba backwaters offer visitors a more unhurried and understated backwater experience along the northern coast.
