Mankayam Ecotourism
Mankayam is an eco-tourism spot situated near Palode in Nedumangadu taluk of Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala. A tributary of the Chittar river, the Mankayam river, flows through this area and feeds two of the finest waterfalls of Southern Kerala, Kalakayam and Kurisadi.Â
This area is considered a prime location of biodiversity and ecological importance of South India. Managed by the State Forest Department, Mankayam has recently been designated as an ecotourism zone to promote responsible travel that conserves the environment.
Kalakayam and Kurisadi Waterfalls
The Kalakayam waterfall is the biggest waterfall in the area and offers a fascinating view with its sheer volume of water. The long expanse of forest vegetation along the Mankayam river extends from Mankayam to Kalakayam.
There are two smaller falls in the Kurisadi area. For adventurous activities like trekking and camping, Kurisadi waterfall is known to be the perfect choice.
To reach the site of both these waterfalls, you have to follow forest trails. There are no signboards placed around the area and you might have to get the help of local guides to get to the waterfalls. Surrounded by dense evergreen forests, the waterfalls offer a majestic view as icy waters cascade into a pool below. A refreshing bath in the cool pond at the base of the waterfall is a wonderful experience.
Trekking and Camping
Mankayam serves as the central location for a wide variety of picnic spots in the region.
Mankayam offers many hiking trails, and the one that goes to Ayampara Waterfalls is especially popular with the local community. Going on trekking expeditions along the Iruthala Moola and Varayadu Motta is a delightful experience for those seeking adventure. The trekking trails are known for rare encounters with endemic species. Varayadu Motta is the region's second tallest mountain and is home to a significant population of Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered species of mountain goat.
The Vanasamrakshana Samithi (Forest Protection Group) offers support for visitors to the place. They have trained guides who can arrange camping facilities.Â
These digital guides serve as invaluable tools for travellers planning their Kerala vacations.
The colours that Ernakulam unites are diverse, the cultures that it represents are vast, but its soul embodies the very essence of God's Own Country. The place has so many ecotourism attractions like Thattekkad, Mangalavanam, Paniyeli Poru, Kodanad, Abhayaranyam and many more.
A city and its surroundings that has seen some of the most poignant moments in Kerala’s history, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala's capital city, is an ecotourism wonder as well.
The Queen of the Hills is not a moniker that is given out lightly, but Munnar claimed it seamlessly like a pureblood monarch. This hill destination is today atop every global traveller's bucket list, standing as the ultimate culmination of natural beauty being gently shaped into an international tourist hotbed.
