Roadside Cascade in Chinnakanal, Idukki

Power House Waterfalls, located near Munnar in Idukki district, is a scenic roadside cascade along the Munnar–Thekkady route. Situated at an altitude of roughly 2000 metres above sea level, the waterfall descends over a steep rock formation before flowing downstream through a forest-lined valley. It is also locally known as Chinnakanal Waterfall due to its location in the Chinnakanal region. The name “Power House Falls” is derived from an old powerhouse structure that once stood nearby.

The waterfall originates from the Sita Devi Lake in Devikulam and flows down through large rock slabs and smooth boulder formations. Unlike very tall vertical waterfalls, Power House Falls spreads across a slanted rock face, creating a broad, white cascade that appears fuller during monsoon months. In peak rains, the water rushes with intensity, covering most of the rock surface in foamy turbulence. During drier periods, individual channels and rock textures become more visible, revealing carved grooves and shallow depressions formed by continuous flow.

A small natural pool forms at the base, where visitors often step closer to experience the cool water. The surrounding terrain consists of large, rounded boulders and flat rock surfaces, requiring careful footing. The backdrop includes dense forest patches, tall trees, and glimpses of plantation slopes typical of the Western Ghats region.

The wider landscape around Power House Waterfalls is equally scenic. Aerial views reveal the river winding through green forest corridors, dotted with exposed rocks and shallow cascades. The location sits within a stretch of high-range terrain known for tea estates, rolling hills, and biodiversity. The vicinity is home to various shrubs and ayurvedic plant species, contributing to the fresh, earthy atmosphere.

Easily accessible and free to visit, Power House Waterfalls serves as a convenient stop for travellers heading toward Thekkady or exploring the Munnar high ranges, making it one of the more photographed roadside waterfalls in Idukki district.
