Splendid River Views and a Tranquil Wetland Landscape

Pullooppikkadavu is a lesser-known natural spot located around six kilometres from Kannur town. Set within a landscape of wetlands, riverbanks, mangrove growth, and backwaters, the area offers a quiet setting close to the urban centre. Its proximity makes it an easy short visit for those staying in or around Kannur.

The area is accessible through multiple routes. Visitors can reach Pullooppikkadavu via Kakkad Road or the Kannadiparamba Step Road. Those travelling from the Mananthavady side can cross the Munderikkadavu bridge along the Koothuparamba–Peralassery–Chakkarakkallu route. Travellers coming from Kozhikode or Thalassery can avoid entering Kannur town by taking a deviation at Thana junction and joining Kakkad Road directly.

A key attraction here is the Pulluppy River View Point, which looks out over the river and surrounding wetlands. The setting is open and quiet, offering space to pause and spend time outdoors. From the bridge, visitors get wide views of the river, mangroves, and backwaters, especially clear on rain-free days. Vehicle parking is permitted on the bridge, which allows people to stop briefly and take in the surroundings without difficulty.

The viewpoint also overlooks the recently opened Pulluppikkadavu Park, developed as part of the Pullooppikkadavu Tourism Project. The first phase of the project, opened in September 2023, introduced walkways, seating areas, and restrooms to improve visitor access and comfort. A floating restaurant has been proposed as part of the second phase.

Because of its location close to the town, Pullooppikkadavu works well as a starting point for exploring nearby landmarks in Kannur. Popular places such as St. Angelo Fort, Payyambalam Beach, Arakkal Museum, and the Handloom Museum are all located within a short driving distance.

St. Angelo Fort stands along the Arabian Sea and reflects the region’s colonial history under Portuguese and British rule. Payyambalam Beach nearby is often visited in the evenings for walks and open sea views. The Arakkal Museum preserves the legacy of the Arakkal dynasty, Kerala’s only Muslim royal family, while the Handloom Museum highlights Kannur’s long association with handloom weaving. Together, these sites allow visitors to combine a quiet nature stop at Pullooppikkadavu with Kannur’s cultural and historical landscape.
