Agasthyarkoodam Trekking

Agasthyarkoodam

Agasthyarkoodam trekking in Thiruvananthapuram offers one of the most unusual wildlife experiences in Kerala. Standing at 1868 meters, Agasthyarkoodam is renowned for its rare medicinal plants and herbs, evergreen forests, grasslands, and diverse fauna, making it a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. This peak, part of the Western Ghats, is a treasure trove of biodiversity, with over 2000 recorded species including lichens, orchids, mosses, and ferns.

The trek begins at Bonacaud, located 50 kilometers northeast of Trivandrum. Accessible via road, Bonacaud serves as the last motorable point. The trekking experience is divided into two phases over three days, starting with a 20-kilometer trek to the base camp. This camp provides basic amenities, including a canteen, dormitory-style shelter, and bathroom facilities. The second phase involves a steep and strenuous 10-kilometer ascent to the peak and back to the base camp. The trek concludes with a return to the Forest checkpoint at Bonacaud.

Agasthyarkoodam is a paradise for bird watchers, attracting enthusiasts eager to spot exotic avian species. The peak, named after the sage Agasthya, is also a popular pilgrimage site. A shrine dedicated to Agasthya is frequented by devotees who believe the air itself has medicinal qualities. The pilgrimage involves a trek of 56 kilometers (28 kilometers one way), making it a trekker's paradise. The region can be viewed from near Neyyar Dam as well as Bonacaud, adding to its accessibility and allure.

The trek is open to the public from January to April, and prior permission from the wildlife warden's office in Thiruvananthapuram is required. The office issues a limited number of passes each year to ensure environmental preservation. The trekking permit costs INR 350 per person and requires the submission of an application form along with photocopies of two valid ID cards. Notably, women are not permitted to participate in this trek due to traditional restrictions.

The main activities during the trek include adventure trekking, wildlife photography, and enjoying the serene streams at the base camp. Essential items to bring include food, water, salt (to ward off leeches), a camera, binoculars, thick socks, sturdy shoes, bed sheets, towels, and sunscreen. Alcohol is strictly prohibited in the area.

Agasthyarkoodam's significance extends beyond its natural beauty. The peak holds a rich cultural and spiritual heritage. The shrine dedicated to sage Agasthya is a focal point for pilgrims, who offer prayers and seek blessings. The air around the peak is believed to have healing properties, adding a mystical element to the trekking experience.

The trek is divided into manageable segments, with rest points and water sources along the route. The journey through dense forests, grasslands, and rocky terrains offers a challenging yet rewarding experience. The steep climb near the summit requires careful navigation, often with the aid of ropes. The breathtaking views from the peak, coupled with the sense of accomplishment, make the arduous trek worthwhile.

Agasthyarkoodam trekking is not just an adventure but an immersion into Kerala's natural and cultural heritage. It provides trekkers with a unique opportunity to explore one of the state's highest peaks, rich in biodiversity and spiritual significance. This trek is a testament to the region's untouched beauty and the enduring legacy of sage Agasthya.
