The most beautiful aspect of the evolution of Islam in Kerala is the fact that its origins were shaped by centuries of trade and cultural interaction, not conquests. Here, we explore how the Malabar Coast in Kerala became one of the very first regions in India to welcome and embrace Islam. Centuries of trade and extensive cultural exchange molded the evolution of Islam in God’s Own Country. From this long process was borne a new legacy of unique art forms, architectural styles, and celebrations. Mappila Theyyam, Mappila Pattu, Oppana, Arabana Muttu, and more such art forms are perfect examples of a vibrant fusion of Arabic and Kerala cultural elements.
