Mayiladumpara

Mayiladumpara

Mayiladumpara (literally, 'rock where the peacock dances') is a haven for peacocks and peacock lovers who wish to see the birds roaming in the wild in their natural habitat. About 25 kms from Palakkad, at Nedungathpara is situated the Choolanur peacock sanctuary or Mayiladumpara, a home to hundreds of peacocks. As you reach the dense forest that sprawls over 500 hectares, piercing squawks of these beautiful birds can be heard from the bordering trees. During overcast days, the chances of witnessing the breathtaking dance of these free, wild birds are high.

The birds can be seen mostly during dawn and dusk. There is a forest outpost five kilometers inside the sanctuary. The sanctuary, which is not fenced or gated, allows free access to all.
