Thrissur Pooram
The Vadakkumnathan Temple at Thrissur is one among the most magnificent and oldest temples in Kerala. It is a classic example of the Kerala style of architecture and has many murals and pieces of art. It is here that the finest Pooram (temple festival) on our shores is celebrated annually in April-May. This jewel of God’s Own Country is known for its glamorous display, which includes mighty caparisoned elephants adorned with ornate golden nettipattoms on their foreheads, marching proudly to the beats of grand panchavadyam (five traditional instruments). Fireworks adorn the skies, while the people indulge in revelry, along with a plethora of rituals and cultural programmes.
