A walk through a 'Suranga' is not your usual stroll. Cut into the laterite hills of Kasaragod, these narrow tunnels lead towards groundwater seeping through the rock, allowing it to be collected and channelled by gravity. Used by local communities for generations, Surangas are an ingenious response to the region’s water needs - a piece of traditional water wisdom hidden beneath the landscape. Step inside one and you are quite literally walking through Kasaragod’s water story: practical, ingenious and, in many places, still very much alive.
