Banana Chips

  • OTHER SOUVENIRS

The variety of snacks is a major attraction of Kerala cuisine, and among these, chips stand out as one of the most popular favourites for people of all ages. While people around the world are familiar with Pringles potato chips, Bahlsen flavored chips, and a variety of French fries, Kerala chips offer a unique experience. Once you start eating these crispy, deep-fried snacks, it's hard to stop. In Kerala, chips are a cherished evening snack, often enjoyed with a hot cup of tea. Kerala's natural chips are made from seasonal fruits and vegetables, those offer rich taste, flavour.  These chips are traditionally made and preserved without artificial colours or added flavours. The most popular varieties include unripe bananas, jackfruits, tapioca, and potatoes.

Banana chips are among the most common and beloved snacks in Kerala. They are an inevitable part of the vegetarian feasts called Sadya, served during ceremonies like weddings and festive occasions such as Onam. Banana chips are usually available in round slices and triangular pieces. While unripe banana chips are the most common, slightly ripe banana chips are also available in the market. Jackfruit is a seasonal fruit, and unripe jackfruit pieces from selected varieties are a popular snack during the Kerala summer. Tapioca is abundant in Kerala, and dried tapioca slices fried to perfection make for another popular snack. These chips are known for their natural salty flavour and are enjoyed by locals and visitors. Unlike French fries, Kerala-style potato chips carry a natural salty flavour.

Traditionally, these chips are made using coconut oil, which is the most commonly used oil in Kerala. This gives the chips a distinct and authentic taste. In Kerala, chips are made both commercially and at home. Commercial chips makers produce large quantities of chips, which are available in packets at snack shops, bakeries, and specialised chips shops throughout the state. Despite the availability of commercial chips, making chips for special occasions and as a regular snack remains a common routine in traditional home kitchens.
