Amrithamedu
Amrithamedu, also known as Kurisumala (Hill of the Cross), is a revered pilgrim center and a trekker’s paradise located in the picturesque Idukki district of Kerala. Standing at an elevation of around 3,500 feet above sea level, it offers a unique blend of spiritual significance and natural beauty. During Easter, it becomes a hub of spiritual activity as pilgrims climb the 'Stations of the Cross', a path marked by 14 points, each symbolizing a phase of Jesus Christ’s last journey. This pilgrimage offers both physical challenge and spiritual fulfillment.
The trek up Amrithamedu reveals stunning vistas of tea estates and the rolling Kokkad Hills. As one ascends, the landscape becomes increasingly captivating, with distant views of Peerumedu and the enchanting beauty of the surrounding hills. Upon reaching the ninth cross, trekkers step onto a mist-shrouded plateau, experiencing a serene and mystical atmosphere. This spot, the highest point in the Kuttikkanam region, offers a moment of tranquility and reflection, making the climb truly memorable.
On the northern side of Amrithamedu lies Madamakulam, a natural pond formed at the base of a waterfall. This secluded spot, surrounded by dense woods and large boulders, provides a peaceful retreat and a refreshing break from the climb. The region is also known for its interconnected water bodies, including the Uppukulam Reservoir and Vellapara Waterfalls. These water bodies form the source of tributaries that go on to form four major rivers: Meenachil, Manimala, Pampa, and Periyar.
Amrithamedu's rich biodiversity includes several rare and endemic species of flora and fauna, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. The hill is home to various species of birds, butterflies, and small mammals, adding to its ecological significance. Additionally, the area’s lush forests and misty mountains offer trekkers an opportunity to experience Kerala's natural heritage at its best.
