A 1,500-year-old temple in Chengannur, dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathy, known for its shared sanctum, exquisite architecture, and unique menstruation festival symbolizing fertility.

The Chengannur Mahadeva Temple, located about 5 km south of Thiruvalla in Alappuzha district, Kerala, is a revered shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva and his consort, Goddess Parvathy. Known for its rich history and architectural grandeur, this temple is believed to have been built over 1,500 years ago by the legendary architect and sculptor Perunthachan. The temple stands as a testament to Kerala's traditional temple architecture and cultural heritage.

One of the unique features of the Chengannur Mahadeva Temple is that both Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathy share the sanctum sanctorum, symbolizing the divine personification of the ideal couple. The temple's layout includes two main shrines: one for Lord Shiva, facing east, and another for Devi Parvathy, facing west. The main shrine is a conical, copper-plated structure, with Devi's idol crafted from an alloy of five metals (Panchaloham). The Shivalingam is adorned with a gold plate bearing the image of Ardhanareeswara, representing the Shiva-Shakti manifestation of Shiva.

The temple is renowned for its beautiful Koothambalam (temple theatre), stunning Mandapams (pavilions), and the mesmerizing Mukhamandapam (frontage of the sanctum), all covered with exquisite woodwork. Despite suffering damage from a fire in the 18th century, the temple complex was renovated, retaining its original architectural splendor except for the Koothambalam, which could not be restored to its original design by Perunthachan. The original Koothambalam was ingeniously constructed so that the shadow of the performer would not fall on the stage if all the lamps were lit.

A significant aspect of the Chengannur Mahadeva Temple is the Thripootha Arattu Festival, celebrated with great pomp and grandeur. This four-day festival is unique as it is associated with the menstruation of Goddess Parvathy. When signs of menstruation appear on the vesture of the Goddess, the festival, considered a symbol of fertility, is observed with various rituals and ceremonies. This distinct tradition makes the Chengannur Mahadeva Temple a significant Shakti Peedam, attracting devotees seeking blessings for fertility and prosperity.

The temple complex also houses several sub-deities, including Ganapathi, Shasta (Lord Ayyappan), Chandikeswaran, Neelagrivan, Ganga, and Naagar, along with a shrine dedicated to Sree Krishna. These additional shrines enhance the spiritual ambiance of the temple, making it a comprehensive place of worship for devotees.
