Karikodu Bhagavathy Temple
Karikkode Bhagavathy Temple, situated in the village of Karikkode near Thodupuzha in Idukki district, Kerala, is an ancient Hindu shrine with a history spanning over 460 years. Dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali, also known as Bhagavathy, the temple holds immense spiritual significance for devotees. The presiding deity is enshrined as a Shilakannadi Prathishta (a mirror-like idol), facing west. Sub-deities worshipped in the temple include Lord Shiva and Lord Ganapathi, and the daily rituals follow the traditional Kaviyadu Tantra, with three poojas conducted every day.
The temple exemplifies Kerala's traditional architectural style, showcasing a unique blend of intricate craftsmanship and spiritual design. Its sacred sanctum houses the idol of Bhagavathy, exuding an aura of power and grace. The temple premises include a beautifully constructed tank, adding to the spiritual ambiance of the place. This ancient structure is a must-visit for those who appreciate heritage and architecture.
The annual Kumbha Bharani festival, celebrated during the Malayalam month of Kumbham on the Ashwathy and Bharani days, is the highlight of the temple's festivities. Thousands of devotees gather to partake in this vibrant celebration, making it a significant cultural and religious event in the region. Other festivals such as Navaratri and Bhairava Poojas are also observed with devotion and enthusiasm.
There are no entry fees to visit the temple. The temple is open to visitors from early morning until late evening. It is advisable to check the specific timings and schedule of rituals before planning your visit. Visitors are expected to adhere to a modest dress code, as a mark of respect to the temple's sanctity.
