Kolagappara is one of those trekking spots in Wayanad that quietly wins you over once you reach the top. Located about five and a half kilometres from Meenangadi on the Mananthavady–Sulthan Bathery route, the hill is easy to access by road. Visitors coming from Kozhikode can travel via Kalpetta to Sulthan Bathery and then continue about 15 kilometres towards Meenangadi to reach Kolagappara. Those arriving from Kannur can take a shorter route through Meenangadi without entering Bathery town. Local bus services are available from Meenangadi as well as Sulthan Bathery, making it a convenient stop for travellers.
There is no entry fee to visit Kolagappara, and the site is generally open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The climb to the summit involves a roughly two-kilometre steep walk. The trail can feel demanding in parts, but once you reach the top, the effort feels worthwhile. From the summit, you get an uninterrupted view of Wayanad’s rolling hills and open stretches. On clear days, even the Krishnagiri Cricket Stadium can be spotted in the distance. The wind at the top and the wide sky above give the place a raw, open character.
One of the most striking features of Kolagappara is its massive monolithic rock formation. The rock rises prominently against the green backdrop of surrounding hills, making it the visual highlight of the trek. The route itself passes through a mix of forest patches and tea plantation stretches, offering changing scenery along the way. The area is rich in plant life and bird activity, which makes it popular with nature enthusiasts and photographers. Many visitors come here simply to sit for a while, take in the landscape and observe the shifting light over the hills.
Kolagappara also provides opportunities to understand local tribal life. With proper guidance arranged through the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) at Kalpetta, visitors can explore nearby tribal settlements and learn about traditional dwellings and everyday practices. Several other attractions can be combined with a visit to Kolagappara. Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad, is another well-known trekking destination and can be covered in a day trip. Pookode Lake, located about 26 kilometres away on the Kozhikode–Wayanad route, offers boating facilities along with an aquarium, children’s park and small shopping area.
Another important natural attraction is Kuruva Island, a densely forested island spread over nearly 700 acres. It can be reached from Sulthan Bathery by travelling towards Mananthavady and taking the Kattikulam–Thirunelli route. A short detour before Kattikulam leads to the entry point. Visitors can purchase tickets, cross by boat and walk along designated paths inside the island. Known for its biodiversity, Kuruva remains a favourite among bird watchers and nature lovers.
