Kottappara is a hilltop viewpoint located near Vallikode–Kottayam in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. Locally referred to as “V-Kottayam,” it is a well-known and frequently visited spot among residents of the region. Rather than being a newly emerging destination, it has long been part of the local landscape and continues to serve as a regular evening gathering point.
The hill forms part of the Western Ghats and is accessed through a combination of road travel and a short, moderate trek depending on the chosen route. While vehicles can reach close to the upper sections, the final stretch often involves walking across uneven terrain. This mixed access distinguishes it from fully drive-up viewpoints and contributes to its use as both a casual outing spot and a light trekking location.
At the top, the terrain opens into an exposed rocky surface with clear views in multiple directions. The elevation provides visibility across surrounding hills, vegetation and settlement patterns typical of the Pathanamthitta region. One of the defining features of the location is the continuous wind movement, with air currents flowing from multiple directions across the open hilltop.
Kottappara remains largely undeveloped, without major built infrastructure at the summit. Its consistent use by local visitors, especially during evening hours, reflects its role as a familiar and accessible outdoor space within Pathanamthitta rather than a formalised tourist viewpoint.
