Kunjalipara is a rocky hill formation located in Mattathur Grama Panchayat, about five kilometres from Kodakara along the Thrissur–Ernakulam stretch of National Highway 66. Known among trekking enthusiasts for its open summit and wide landscape views, the hill rises above surrounding greenery to offer clear aerial perspectives of fields, forest patches and distant ranges. The climb is moderate and suitable for regular walkers, making it a popular short-distance trekking destination in central Kerala.

The defining feature of Kunjalipara is its expansive rock surface at the top. The summit opens into a broad, elevated plateau from which blue skies and layered green landscapes merge into a continuous horizon. Early mornings and late afternoons are particularly preferred, when the light softens and visibility improves across the plains below. The site has also hosted art camps and small gatherings, as the open rock face provides space without heavy structural intervention.

Close to Kunjalipara lies a seasonal waterfall locally referred to as “Mini Athirappilly,” drawing comparison with the larger Athirappilly Waterfalls. Though smaller in scale, the cascade adds visual variety to the trekking experience, especially during and after the monsoon months.

Local folklore links Kunjalipara to Kunjali Marakkar, the naval commander of the Zamorin of Kozhikode. According to tradition, he is believed to have taken refuge in these hills during a period of conflict. While the historical accuracy of this claim remains uncertain, the terrain itself which is elevated, forested and relatively secluded, supports the imagination of such narratives.

Unlike many wooded hill tracts in Kerala where wildlife movement may restrict access, Kunjalipara remains relatively approachable for day trekkers. However, visitors are advised to exercise caution, particularly due to the presence of snakes in the undergrowth and rocky crevices. Proper footwear and attentive walking are recommended.

The region surrounding Kunjalipara holds ecological significance, with dense vegetation and fragile hill ecosystems. In recent years, public opposition has led to the suspension of illegal quarrying activities that threatened the landscape. The preservation of this terrain remains important to maintain its environmental balance and trekking appeal.
