A legendary temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, known for its unique Gajaprashta architecture, spiritual legends, and cultural significance in Kerala.

Sree Mannur Shiva Kshethram, located in Calicut, Kerala, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Steeped in history and spirituality, the temple is believed to be one of the 108 Shiva temples established by Parasurama, the legendary creator of Kerala. The temple is renowned for its architectural brilliance, spiritual significance, and serene ambiance, making it a focal point for devotees in the region.

The temple is associated with an intriguing legend where Parasurama is said to begin his Shiva Linga Prathishtha (consecration) at Tiruvannur and complete it at Mannur every noon. This sacred tradition underscores the temple's unique spiritual importance. Lord Shiva is worshipped here in the form of Aghoramurthy, representing the fierce and angry aspect of Shiva following the Dakshayaga. Other deities, including Sreeparvathi, Dakshinamurthy, and Vigneswara, are also enshrined as upadevathas (sub-deities) in the temple complex.

Architecturally, Mannur Shiva Kshethram is a marvel. The temple, over a thousand years old, showcases the rare Gajaprashta design, resembling the back of an elephant. While the temple inscriptions date back 400 years, the Gajaprashta structure is over two centuries old. The west-facing sanctum sanctorum is constructed in two levels with meticulous architectural precision. The foundation is crafted from granite, while the red laterite stone walls are adorned with intricate carvings, showcasing the region's rich craftsmanship.

The sprawling temple complex includes shrines for Mahavishnu, Sastha, and Karinkali, along with the Chuttambalam (outer hall). This harmonious blend of deities and architectural features adds to the temple's allure and spiritual significance.

Mannur Shiva Kshethram remains a center of devotion and cultural heritage, drawing pilgrims and visitors seeking blessings, tranquility, and an appreciation of Kerala's ancient architectural and spiritual traditions.
