Palchuram is a high-altitude mountain pass situated along the Western Ghats, linking the forested interiors of Kannur district with Wayanad. The route passes through a settlement known as Boys Town, which is why the stretch is commonly referred to as the Boys Town Road. Rising to an elevation of roughly 3,000 feet, Palchuram forms part of a narrow ghat corridor characterised by dense forests, steep descents, and winding curves.
The road begins around Ambayathode and descends towards Boys Town, cutting through thick vegetation and offering frequent views of deep valleys and forest canopies below. One of the defining features of this pass is its series of five hairpin bends. These bends are closely spaced and sharply angled, making the drive demanding for inexperienced mountain drivers while remaining a preferred route for seasoned travellers seeking challenging terrain and uninterrupted forest scenery.
Palchuram lies close to important cultural and ecological landmarks. The route provides access towards the Kottiyoor Temple, a major seasonal pilgrimage site located within dense forest. Along the way, visitors also come across the Kottiyoor Honey Centre, where beekeeping and forest-based honey collection are practiced, reflecting the region’s long-standing relationship with its surrounding ecology.
A major natural attraction associated with the pass is Palchuram Waterfalls, located at Boys Town near the border of Wayanad and Kannur districts. The waterfall cascades in four distinct stages from a height of nearly 300 feet, flowing through dense evergreen and deciduous forest. The falls can be reached by walking approximately one to two kilometres from the road, followed by a forest trail that leads past plantations and shaded woodland. The surrounding forest remains dim even during bright daylight, and wildlife presence is known, making caution essential while visiting.
During the monsoon months, Palchuram’s character changes dramatically. Mist settles across the road, seasonal streams appear along the slopes, and multiple small waterfalls flow down the mountainsides. The combination of altitude, forest cover, and limited development allows the pass to retain a largely untouched atmosphere. Together, the road, the waterfalls, and the surrounding forests define Palchuram as a mountain corridor shaped by terrain, elevation, and continuous natural cover rather than built attractions.
