The Hilltop Known as the ‘Kashmir of Kannur’

Thirunettikkallu is a lesser-known hill destination located within the mountain ranges of Kannur district. Spread across an area of approximately 19 acres, the landscape is defined by steep climbs, rocky paths, open grass-covered slopes, and cool, mist-filled air. Because of its elevated terrain and layered mountain views, the area is often referred to locally as the “Kashmir of Kannur.”

The location falls across the Cherupuzha and Udayagiri Panchayats, with Josegiri being the nearest town. From Kannur, visitors can reach Josegiri via two main routes: the Kannur–Taliparamba–Alakode route or the Kannur–Payyannur–Cherupuzha route. While buses to Alakode are available from Kannur, connections through Taliparamba are more frequent. Those travelling from Kasaragod or Payyannur generally find the Cherupuzha route more convenient. From Cherupuzha, Josegiri is about 19 kilometres away.

From Josegiri, Thirunettikkallu can be reached through a two-and-a-half-kilometre uphill trail. The route is rocky and often muddy, especially during wetter months. It can be covered on foot, by jeep, or by two-wheeler for those seeking a more adventurous approach. The climb itself forms a key part of the experience, gradually opening up views of surrounding hills and forested slopes.

At the summit stands a large rolling stone positioned between two massive boulders, bearing a resemblance to a forehead. This feature holds religious significance for the local Christian community and is believed to be the origin of the name Thirunettikkallu, meaning “holy forehead stone.” An iron ladder allows visitors to climb onto the stone. From this vantage point, clear days offer expansive views across Kannur and Kasaragod districts and into parts of Karnataka, including the Bhagamandala region of Kodagu.

The hilltop environment is marked by cool winds, frequent mist, freshwater springs, and small waterfalls that appear during the season. The Tejaswini River, flowing from the forests of Karnataka, adds to the broader landscape visible from the higher points. Together, these elements make Thirunettikkallu a rewarding trekking location with a strong sense of openness and elevation.

The best time to experience Thirunettikkallu begins around November, when the landscape turns greener and mist moves steadily across the hills. Though clouds and light drizzle may occasionally limit visibility, this period highlights the character of the Western Ghats. With growing interest from travellers, basic facilities such as homestays, food options, and tented stays have begun to appear, allowing visitors to spend more time in the area while keeping its natural setting largely intact.
