Misty Hill Trek and Granite Temple Summit in Malappuram

Thiruvonamala, also known as Oorakam Mala, rises to about 2,200 feet above sea level in Malappuram district. Part of the Western Ghats, the hill has gradually become a favoured trekking spot for those looking for open landscapes, quiet climbs and historic stone structures at the summit.

The trek begins along narrow paths lined with tall grass and shrubs. In the early hours, mist often settles along the trail, softening the view ahead. The climb includes natural rock stretches and stone steps leading upward through dense green cover. As the path rises, the landscape opens into meadow-like patches interspersed with scattered trees.

At the top stands the Thiruvarachanamkunnu Temple, also known as the Sri Sankara Narayana Swamy Temple. The granite structure, built with thick stone blocks and pillared mandapas, reflects an architectural style that feels both simple and enduring. The circular shrine and adjoining stone remains give the summit a historic character. A natural spring flowing across the rock surface is traditionally considered the temple’s water source.

Thiruvonamala is locally associated with an annual festival held in the Malayalam month of Thulam on the Thiruvonam day. During this period, devotees gather at the hilltop temple, adding a vibrant dimension to what is otherwise a quiet trekking landscape.

The summit offers expansive views of the surrounding countryside. On clear evenings, the horizon softens into warm shades, and the steady wind from the Western Ghats becomes one of the defining experiences of the hill. Thiruvonamala lies along the border between Kannamangalam and Oorakam panchayaths and remains one of Malappuram’s scenic hill destinations that combines trekking, heritage and open natural terrain.
