Uthralikkavu Sree Bhagavathy Temple, situated in the serene village of Engakkadu in Wadakkanchery, Thrissur district, is an ancient and revered Devi shrine. Surrounded by sprawling paddy fields, the temple is not just a spiritual centre but also a vibrant symbol of Kerala's cultural heritage. Originally called Rudhiramahakali Kavu, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Rudhiramahakali. According to legend, Kelathachan, a local landlord from Thalappilly, carried the idol of Goddess Mookambika on his umbrella while inspecting his fields. When he placed the umbrella near a ridge, the Goddess chose that spot as her abode. This site, now called Mullakal Sreemoolasthanam, features a unique sanctum sanctorum open to the skies, reflecting its deep-rooted spiritual significance.

The temple is intrinsically connected with Machad Thiruvanikavu, located just 4 kilometres away. These temples are believed to be "sister shrines," their festivals are celebrated in tandem, showcasing a harmonious blend of traditions. The Uthralikkavu Pooram, one of Kerala's most spectacular festivals, is held annually in February or March. It features a grand procession of 33 caparisoned elephants, accompanied by traditional orchestras like Panchavadyam and Pandimelam. The dazzling fireworks display during the festival draws thousands of devotees and tourists, making it an unmissable event.

The temple's history is intertwined with fascinating stories. One such tale involves a woman sharpening her sickle near the temple site, accidentally striking the idol, which then began to bleed. The idol was consecrated following astrological consultations, and the temple was established with meticulous rituals.

Uthralikkavu Sree Bhagavathy Temple remains a vibrant hub of devotion and culture, preserving its traditions. Its annual Pooram festival and historical significance continue to attract spiritual seekers and cultural enthusiasts, making it a must-visit destination in Kerala.
