    Strength and Skill

The striking image of a lone worker skilfully operating a coir machine in an Alappuzha factory offers a window into the world of coir manufacturing - an industry that has shaped the economy, culture and daily life of this region for generations. Alappuzha, often called the "Venice of the East" for its intricate web of backwaters and canals, has long held a central place in Kerala's coir sector, which remains a major source of livelihood for its people.

The success of the coir industry here is rooted in local resources and geography: the abundant coconut palms provide a steady supply of raw material, while the waterways facilitate the wetting and processing of green husk essential for quality coir fibre. The image of a worker managing the machinery alone highlights both the strength and expertise required for this craft, as well as the traditional methods that exists alongside newer technologies.

Coir production in Alappuzha traces its commercial origins to 1859, when American entrepreneur James Darragh established M/s Darragh Smail Ltd., pioneering the export of mats and mattings to international markets. Since then, the industry has evolved with support from institutions like the Coir Board (founded under the Coir Industry Act of 1955), the Coir Research Institute at Kalavoor, and the National Coir Training and Design Centre, established in 1965. These bodies have provided training, research, and market access, helping to keep the craft competitive and relevant.

While Alappuzha's economic landscape has diversified over time - with products like marine food, handlooms and coconut oil also contributing to its industrial map - coir remains the district's signature commodity. Factories across towns such as Kayamkulam, Mannancherry, and Cherthala are sustained by skilled labourers like the one in the photo, whose solitary focus and precise handling of the coir machine reflect both personal resilience and a shared heritage.

The continuing sight of dedicated workers in coir factories - often working with little more than their hands, skill and simple machines - embodies the legacy and future potential of this iconic Kerala industry.
