The annual Edathua Perunnal brings the tranquil riverside village of Edathua in Alappuzha district to life with devotion and festivity. At the heart of this grand celebration stands St. George Forane Church, its striking European Gothic facade adorned and aglow in the late afternoon sun.
The scene is alive with energy - a massive crowd fills the church grounds and spills out onto the surrounding streets. Devotees and pilgrims, shoulder to shoulder, create a vibrant tapestry punctuated by colourful umbrellas in shades of red, yellow and purple. Each year, thousands gather here from across the region and beyond, drawn by deep faith and the promise of communal celebration.
Edathua Perunnal, also known as the Feast of St. George, begins with the ceremonious hoisting of the festival flag on April 27th, signalling the official start of nearly two weeks of religious fervour. The days that follow are filled with special prayers, solemn masses, and retreats, all dedicated to honouring St. George. The festival's high point is the majestic procession, where the gold-adorned statue of St. George is carried through the village and to the riverbank, accompanied by priests, musicians and worshippers. Traditional music, chanting and offerings create a moving spiritual atmosphere, uniting the faithful in shared devotion.
