Kottangal Padayani, held annually at the Kottangal Devi Temple begins with the ritual of chootukathikal (burning of dried coconut leaves) on the Bharani asterism in the Malayalam month of Dhanu (December) and ends with Valiya Padayani on Bharani asterism in the Malayalam month of Makaram (January).
