Founded by St Thomas in 54 AD, St Mary’s Orthodox Church at Niranam in Pathanamthitta district is one of the most ancient churches in the world. Located around 10 km from Thiruvalla, Niranam Valiyapally is a parish under the Niranam diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and contains the mortal remains of St Thomas. Famous for its historical importance and architectural beauty, the church has a huge granite cross, the remains of the old church, a golden cross, and preserves ancient inscriptions on palm leaves.
