During his youth, Sree Narayana Guru evinced a profound detachment from worldly affairs, showing little interest in conventional marital and familial bonds. Concerned about his pronounced disinterest, his family believed marriage would be the remedy. Guru's father, therefore, arranged to get his son married to his grandniece, Kaliamma. At the time, little value was placed on the opinions of the bride and groom regarding marriage. Following the social customs of the day, the groom’s sister received Kaliamma into their family as Guru’s bride, presenting her with the ritualistic bridal saree. Guru showed no interest whatsoever in the whole ceremony. He is said to have told the bride who stood before him: "Every human being is born into this world for the accomplishment of a specific purpose. I have my path, you have yours. Therefore, leave me for the fulfillment of my duty." Thus ended their nascent marital life.

The circumstances surrounding Guru's marriage underscore the deep chasm between traditional societal expectations and his burgeoning spiritual destiny. While his family viewed a domestic alliance as a practical anchor to steady a young man they perceived as drifting, Narayana Guru viewed it through the lens of ultimate detachment. The selection of Kaliamma by his father and the subsequent rituals performed by his sister were, in the eyes of the community, the commencement of a standard life cycle. However, for Guru, these events were merely external occurrences that could not penetrate his internal state of renunciation. His refusal to participate emotionally or physically in the union was not an act of rebellion, but a clear-eyed recognition of his soul's true orientation.

By gently yet firmly directing Kaliamma toward her own path, he transformed a potentially tragic domestic conflict into a profound lesson on individual agency and divine purpose. It demonstrated that his "specific purpose" was incompatible with the localized responsibilities of a householder, as his compassion was destined to encompass a much broader human family. Ultimately, this brief chapter in his life serves to highlight the singular focus he maintained.
