The annual pilgrimage at Sivagiri Mutt serves as a powerful platform to propagate Sree Narayana Guru's profound visions. When the office bearers of the time failed to embrace Nataraja Guru's instructions for conducting pilgrimage conferences in line with Guru's original vision, Nataraja Guru chose to stay at the nearby Gurukulam. In 1951, this led to an informal gathering of pilgrims seeking his guidance – the first Gurukulam Convention, where he, assisted by Nitya Chaitanya Yati, imparted explanations.
This pivotal meeting led to a decision: from 1952 onwards, the Gurukulam would host an official, week-long convention alongside the Sivagiri pilgrimage, dedicated to imparting philosophical knowledge to Guru's devotees. Nataraja Guru, John Peters, Swami Mangalananda, and Nitya Chaitanya Yati delivered key speeches, and Nataraja Guru also ensured that arrangements were made for poor residents to enjoy cultural programs at least once a year. This conference successfully drew the attention of those keen on studying Narayana Guru's philosophies towards the Gurukulam.
The Gurukulam Convention continues to be a unique opportunity for serious students of Guru's philosophy and followers of the Gurukulam movement to gather and live together for a week. Free from distinctions of caste, religion, language, region, age, gender, or educational background, everyone converges in Guru's presence, engaging in mantras, Vedas, and Upanishads, all without any formal protocol.
The modern vision of national and popular prosperity and progress remains the core objective of the pilgrimage today. Its remarkable growth from a small gathering to a movement involving tens of thousands of people stands as a testament to Guru's extraordinary foresight.
This enduring tradition bridges the gap between ritual and profound philosophical inquiry, ensuring that the Gurukulam Convention remains a vital center for spiritual education. By maintaining an environment of absolute equality and open dialogue, the pilgrimage honors the Guru’s original intent, transforming a simple gathering into a global movement dedicated to social harmony and universal enlightenment.
