Puthupally Perunnal

Puthupally Perunnal

Festivals in Kerala are a conglomeration of colours, lights and music. Same is the case with the renowned Puthuppally Perunnal, a two-day event full of splendour and majesty, celebrated at the St George Orthodox Church, Puthuppally in Kottayam. The festivities here begin ten days prior to the festival with the installation of the festival flag mast brought in ceremonial processions from nearby places. Thousands of devotees flock to the church premises to attend the mass.

Vechoottu (a ceremonial feast), adya choroonu (a ritual in which children get their first rice feeding by priests) etc. are some of the rituals associated with the festival. Later, Raza, the grand festival procession will be taken out with the holy golden cross from the church to the nearby Puthuppally junction. Thousands of devotees take part in this procession. Holy crosses in wood, silver and gold, colourful ceremonial umbrellas and orchestral accompaniment make the procession an extravaganza of sight and sound. An impressive fireworks display marks the conclusion of the festival.
