CVN Kalari
CVN Kalari Sangham in East Fort, Thiruvananthapuram, is a distinguished institution that has played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting the traditional martial art of Kalaripayattu since its establishment in 1956, the year Kerala was formed as a state. This center, founded by Sri C. V. Govindan Kutty Nair Gurukkal following the lineage of Sri C.V. Narayanan Nair Gurukkal, was the first to offer training in the northern style of Kalaripayattu in southern Kerala.
Historical Evolution and Contributions
The lineage of Kalaripayattu taught here traces back to Kottakkal Kanaran Gurukkal and C. V. Narayanan Nair Gurukkal, who were instrumental in taking the martial art from the traditional kalari pits to public platforms, enhancing its visibility and appeal. Their efforts included a notable performance in 1954 before Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, which significantly boosted the stature of this martial form. After the untimely death of C. V. Narayanan Nair Gurukkal, leadership passed to his brother and later his son, who continued to expand their outreach, popularizing Kalaripayattu across Kerala and beyond.
Architectural and Structural FeaturesÂ
The modern structure of the CVN Kalari, which replaced a traditional thatched roof in 1973, was designed by renowned painter, sculptor, and architect M.V. Devan. This redesign marked a new era for the kalari, which now accommodates training in both the Northern and Southern styles of Kalaripayattu.
Training and Cultural ImpactÂ
The kalari is known as a 'kuzhi kalari' – a traditional training pit where the martial art is taught. It is one of the few in South Kerala that trains students in both Kalaripayattu styles. Training here starts from the age of seven, though many older students also join. The training regimen includes Ayurvedic massages and yoga, essential components that complement the physical rigors of Kalaripayattu.
Kalari Chikitsa - Traditional TreatmentÂ
An integral part of the CVN Kalari is its 'Kalarichikitsa' clinic, specializing in Ayurvedic orthopedic treatments to cure physical ailments like sprains, bone fractures, and bruises. The Gurukkal in charge brings years of experience and deep knowledge in Ayurveda and Marmachikitsa, ensuring authentic and effective treatment modalities are followed, with medicines manufactured onsite.
Courses and International Recognition
CVN Kalari offers courses in Kalarippayattu twice a year, aligning with the seasonal cycles—before the onset of the monsoon in June and during Vidyaarambham in October. Recognized as a training center that can grant international scholarships through the ICCR, it attracts both local and international students. The kalari also features a visitors' gallery for up to 25 people, where daily performances are held, and special demonstrations can be arranged with advance notice.
