Edneer Mutt
Edneer Mutt, located ten kilometers northeast of Kasaragod town, is a revered Hindu monastic center situated on the plains by the banks of the Madhuvahini River. This ancient mutt belongs to the lineage of Totakacharya, one of the four chief disciples of Shankaracharya, and is rooted in the Smartha Bhagavatha tradition and the Advaita Vedanta school of Indian philosophy. The main deities worshipped at Edneer Mutt are Dakshinamurthi and Gopalakrishna, while the guardian deity, Daiva Kuntipala Chamundi, is worshipped in a nearby temple.
According to tradition, centuries ago, Totakacharya initiated a Sivalli Brahmin from Tulunad, who had migrated to Kerala, into monastic life and entrusted him with the responsibility of upholding the Sivalli Brahmin tradition. Over time, Edneer Mutt evolved into a significant center of education, arts, and culture. The mutt gained prominence under the leadership of Satchidananda Bharati, who spread its spiritual influence through his teachings and speeches. Later, Balakrishnananda Bharati played a crucial role in the all-round development of the mutt, including the renovation of the Vishnumangala temple, as recorded in copper plate inscriptions.
During the tenure of Srimadiswarananda Bharathi, Edneer Mutt became an important educational hub with the establishment of a Higher Elementary School and a High School in the area. These institutions, initially under the management of the District Board, later became government schools after the transfer of Kasaragod to Kerala. The mutt also holds significance for its cultural heritage, with four Bhoota Sthanas (spirit shrines) located nearby at Koorkapadi, Chambrampadi, Kandatteveed, and Bhairamoole.
Edneer Mutt, also known as Sri Shankaracharya Totakacharya Mahasamsthanam, continues to attract visitors and devotees from Kerala and neighboring states. It serves as a center for spiritual studies, frequently hosting dialogues and discussions on religious and spiritual matters. The simplicity and serenity of Edneer Mutt, along with its rich cultural and spiritual heritage, make it a significant institution for art, culture, literature, and learning in the region.

Where Shades of History Mingle with Nature's Embrace. Nestled like a sentinel on Kerala’s northern shores, Kasaragod proudly displays its crown jewel - Bekal Fort, a behemoth of history kissed by the Arabian Sea’s azure embrace.
Described as the land of Forts and Gods, Kasaragod is noted for Theyyam, a performing art that blends dance, myth, drama, music, art and theatrics. The magnificent key-hole shaped Bekal Fort is an architectural wonder. The northernmost district of Kerala, Kasaragod is also renowned for its hills, water bodies, and coir and handloom industry
Kasaragod has stood witness to the settlement of various human communities within its borders that came in the wake of military invasions, commercial travels and diplomatic missions. Subsequently their languages and their cultures nourished the adoptive region, and Kasaragod became a land of seven tongues
