Kerala Sahitya Academi
The Kerala Sahitya Akademi, established in 1956, is a prestigious institution dedicated to the promotion and development of Malayalam literature and language. Situated in a sprawling bungalow in Thrissur, the academy operates as an autonomous body and plays a vital role in nurturing literary talent in Kerala. Each year, the Akademi recognizes outstanding contributions to Malayalam literature through its esteemed literary awards, which are highly regarded in the literary community.
The Akademi’s headquarters, initially located in Thiruvananthapuram, were moved to Thrissur in 1958. The institution was formally inaugurated at Kanakakunnu Palace by Maharaja Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma of Travancore, with Sardar K.M. Panicker serving as its first president.
The primary objective of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi is to foster the growth and progress of Malayalam language and literature. To achieve this, the Akademi undertakes a wide range of activities, including translating literary masterpieces into and from Malayalam, publishing reference books, and organizing literary workshops and seminars. The Akademi also focuses on encouraging research in language, literature, and culture, providing scholarships for study tours, and assisting writers with book publishing.
One of the key features of the Akademi is its extensive publication department, which has produced numerous valuable books that contribute significantly to the study of Malayalam language and Kerala culture. The Akademi is particularly noted for publishing works with high research value, even if they have limited commercial appeal.
The Kerala Sahitya Akademi also publishes several periodicals, including Sahitya Chakravalam, Sahitya Lokam, and Malayalam Literary Survey. These publications have made substantial contributions to the field of Malayalam literary studies, with Sahitya Lokam and Malayalam Literary Survey being recognized as research journals by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
In addition to its literary activities, the Akademi houses a portrait gallery dedicated to late Malayalam writers, a cassette library with voice recordings of famous authors, and a digital conservation lab for preserving rare manuscripts and documents. The Akademi’s library is a cornerstone of the institution, containing a vast collection of books and documents related to Malayalam language and literature. It is the only institution recognized as a Malayalam research center by all the universities in Kerala, making it an elite hub for literary research.
The Kerala Sahitya Akademi continues to be a beacon of literary excellence in Kerala, preserving the rich heritage of Malayalam literature while supporting the development of new literary voices and scholarship.
