The Akademi's headquarters, initially located in Thiruvananthapuram, were moved to Thrissur in 1958. The institution was formally inaugurated at Kanakakunnu Palace by Maharaja Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma of Travancore, with Sardar K.M. Panicker serving as its first president.

The primary objective of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi is to foster the growth and progress of Malayalam language and literature.
