Thunchan Memorial is a revered cultural and literary landmark dedicated to Thunchath Ezhuthachan, the father of the Malayalam language, located in Thunchan Parambu, Tirur, Malappuram. This historic site, where the 16th-century poet was born, has evolved into a hub for literary research, manuscript preservation, and cultural celebrations. Ezhuthachan is credited with popularizing the Malayalam script and rendering the Ramayana and Mahabharata in his distinct poetic style, making his contributions fundamental to Kerala's literary heritage.
At the heart of the memorial is the Thunchan Memorial Trust and Research Centre, established in 1964 and expanded under the leadership of M.T. Vasudevan Nair in 2001. The centre houses a literary museum, a research library with 15,000 books and 120 manuscripts, the Grandhapura (manuscript library), and the Saraswathi Mandapam, a granite structure dedicated to the goddess of knowledge. The historic iron stylus used by Ezhuthachan and the ancient Kanjira tree under which he composed his works remain preserved, drawing scholars and literary enthusiasts alike.
The Thunchan Festival, held annually in February, is a major highlight, featuring literary seminars, poetry readings, music and dance performances, and a grand procession of Ezhuthachan's iron stylus. Another significant event is the Vidyarambham ceremony on Vijayadashami, where young children are initiated into the world of letters by renowned literary figures. Recognized as a Manuscript Resource Centre by the National Manuscript Mission, Thunchan Memorial continues to uphold and celebrate the legacy of Kerala's literary pioneer.
