Irupathezham Ravu

Mappilas observe the 26th night of Ramzan, known as Lailat al-Qadr (The Night of Power), with deep devotion. In the Hijri calendar, a day begins at sunset, meaning the 27th night in the Arabic calendar falls on the 26th night according to local reckoning. This night is believed to be the most blessed in Ramadan, commemorating the first revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad.

The Quran (Surah Al-Qadr) describes this night as "better than a thousand months," emphasizing its immense spiritual significance. Mappilas believe that on this night, Allah decrees the fate of individuals and nations for the coming year, showering his mercy and forgiveness upon those who pray sincerely.

Muslims engage in increased devotion, including fasting, prayers, Quran recitation, and charity. They spend the night in mosques or at home in prayer and dua (supplication), seeking forgiveness and blessings. The Tarawih prayer (special Ramadan prayer) continues as usual, and many mosques hold a Quran completion ceremony (Khatm-ul-Quran). The recitation of Surah Al-Qadr and Surah Ya-Sin is emphasized, as these chapters are believed to bring additional blessings. Collective dua sessions are organized in mosques, led by the imam. A special congregation is held at Ma’din Academy in Malappuram, where thousands gather for the dua ceremony.

The exact date of Lailat al-Qadr is unknown, though it is commonly believed to fall on the 26th night of Ramadan. Some Mappilas also observe heightened devotion on odd nights during the last ten days of Ramadan, in keeping with Prophet Muhammad’s teachings.

On the morning after Lailat al-Qadr, poor people visit the houses of the wealthy to receive charity, and long lines of people can be seen in front of affluent homes. A special sweet bread called kalathappam (a thick rice bread made with jaggery, coconut, rice, and other ingredients) is prepared. A portion of the bread is taken to mosques, where it is distributed after the Tarawih prayers.
