Mishkal Masjid & Kanjiramattom Mosque

Tucked away in the historic neighborhood of Kuttichira in Kozhikode, Mishkal Masjid stands as a 650-year-old architectural marvel and a symbol of cultural unity. Built by Arab trader Nakhooda Mishkal, this four-storeyed mosque defies conventional Islamic architecture with its unique blend of Islamic and temple-style design elements. With no domes or minarets, the mosque instead showcases the elegance of Kerala’s traditional craftsmanship, featuring finely carved wooden pillars, mihrab-style doors, and a beautifully ornate wooden mimbar (pulpit).

The mosque's entrance, paved with Italian tiles, opens to a spacious prayer hall that accommodates around 300 worshippers.  Damaged during a Portuguese assault in the 16th century, the mosque was later restored, representing a powerful narrative of resilience and interfaith solidarity.

Surrounding Mishkal Masjid is the heritage-rich locality of Kuttichira, home to other historic mosques like Jama Palli, known for its circular architecture, and Muchundi Palli, both contributing to the area’s rich cultural landscape.

A visit to Mishkal Masjid is not just a spiritual experience but a deep dive into Kozhikode’s enduring legacy of communal harmony and historical richness.

Kanjiramattom Mosque

At Kanjiramittam, near Ernakulam, the shrine of Shaikh Fariduddin Khurasani attracts pilgrims.

The mosque, located about 25 km southeast of Kochi in Ernakulam District, was built in honor of the revered Sufi saint Sheikh Fariduddin. The peaceful atmosphere of the mosque is further enriched by the presence of mazhars and dargahs, making it a prominent spiritual site.

The highlight of this mosque is the annual Kanjiramattom Kodikuthu festival, celebrated in January. A key ritual of the festival is the Chandanakkudam procession, where devotees carry pots adorned with sandalwood paste as a tribute to the saint. The festivities also feature caparisoned elephants and traditional Muslim folk performances like Duffmuttu and Kolkali, adding vibrant cultural flair to the event.

The Kanjiramattom Mosque stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of spiritual devotion and cultural festivities, drawing visitors and pilgrims from various backgrounds to partake in its unique traditions.
