Writers of the Christian community were the first to make a major attempt at writing novels in Malayalam. The novel Fulmony ennum Koruna ennum peraya randu sthreekalude katha written by Mrs. Catherine Mulloos in 1858, and Khathaka Vadham written by Mrs. Richard Collins in 1877 are among the early novels in Malayalam. Pulleli Kunju, written by Archdeacon Koshy was published in 1882. The other works like Kunnukuzhy Kochu Thomman Apothecary’s Parishkarapothy (1892) and Balika Sadanam (1895), Joseph Muliyil’s Sukumari (1897), Wariath Chory Peter’s Parishkara Vijayam (1904) unravelled the social life of Christians during the initial stages.
