Sree Mridanga Saileshwari Temple

An ancient temple situated in Muzhakkunnu village of Kannur district, Sree Mridanga Saileshwari temple, is one among the 108 Durga temples established by Lord Parasurama. Hence it occupies a significant place in the hearts of devotees. There is an interesting story about the origin of the temple that is related to music. It is believed that Goddess Mridanga Saileshwari took birth on her own (swayambhoo) in the shape of Mridangam, a musical instrument.

The goddess was the family deity of Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja. Before going to battles, kings used to perform Bali [animal sacrifice] in the den temple situated on the west side of the main temple, although that structure is in ruins now. This den temple is considered as the Aaroodasthanam [the central point] of all Porkali temples in Kerala.

The idea of the female form of dancers in Kathakali is said to have materialized here, and the composition of many Kathakali padams [poems] by Kottayam Thampuran of the Kottayam royal dynasty took place in this temple precincts.
