The Festival of New Beginnings

Vishu marks the traditional New Year in Kerala and is a celebration of hope, prosperity, and fresh beginnings. Observed with deep cultural significance, the festival usually falls in mid-April, heralding the arrival of spring and the harvest season.

The highlight of Vishu is the Vishukkani—an auspicious arrangement of items such as rice, fruits, vegetables, golden cucumber, betel leaves, flowers, coins, and a mirror, all placed before an image of Lord Krishna. It is believed that seeing this sacred arrangement first thing in the morning brings good fortune for the year ahead.

Festivities also include the giving of Vishukkaineetam (gifts of money) by elders to younger members, the bursting of firecrackers, and the preparation of a grand feast known as Vishu Sadya, featuring a variety of traditional Kerala dishes.
