Why is Lungi so popular in Kerala?

Lungi or coloured / patterned dhoti is a traditional outfit for men. Women also wear it while at home and sometimes while doing work as part of farming in paddy fields, rubber plantations or tea estate. It is a popular attire and an easy-to-wear garment, which allows a lot of air circulation, keeping the body cool even during the hottest months. Men in Kerala usually find it very convenient since it can be folded up and tucked at the waist level. This permits them greater freedom and mobility while doing physically demanding tasks, like riding a bicycle or climbing a coconut tree.
