Mr. Shashi Tharoor

He is United Nations? Under Secretary General for Communications and Public Information and is also one of the noted writers from India. This man is none other than Kerala?s own Shashi Tharoor.

Mr. Tharoor was recently in Kerala in connection with couple of public engagements and this month?s impressions carry some of the observations and intimate thoughts of Mr. Tharoor as shared in an interview to the English daily ?The Hindu?.

Mr. Shashi Tharoor spends most of his time away from Kerala due to his official commitments. But, whenever he gets back home, he has been one of a keen observer and appraiser of various happenings in Kerala, especially those with regard to the socio-economic development and overall welfare of the State and the people.

During this time too, he was very keen to share his thoughts on some of the Kerala aspects that struck him the most. Mr. Tharoor felt that Kerala?s development indices are improving appreciably, with social values and pluralism remaining intact, as it was in the past. Mr. Tharoor made special emphasis to the social advancement made by weaker sections of the society and was delighted by the kind of rights enjoyed by the women folk of Kerala.

According to Mr. Tharoor, these days it is easy to be a proud Keralite, because of the overall state of affairs, which at present is taking Kerala in the right direction of development and growth.

And whenever he comes to Kerala, in spite of the limited time that he has at his disposal, Mr. Tharoor always would have few must-do things in Kerala, before he returns. Among those would be, the opportunity to relish some of the ethnic delicacies, to his heart?s contend. Mr. Tharoor has a special liking for idlis and dosas, which he enjoys well with onion chutney, which is a speciality of Palakkad, where his ancestral home is situated. He also has a special liking for vegetable dishes like Kaalan, Olan and Erisherry. Well, this could be his way of getting charged up, enabling him to undertake and perform the highly demanding tasks as a top ranked UN official.

Well, let us hope that when Mr. Shashi Tharoor makes his next visit to his home State, things would be more appealing and interesting to him; perhaps to the extent of making him stay longer than the usual.
