Periyar House

Winning consistently the award for the 'best one star hotel,' in the past several years, Periyar House overlooking the scenic Periyar Lake is a favourite among travellers reaching Thekkady - the renowned wildlife destination in Kerala.

Periyar House belonging to the Economy segment of hotels is managed by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC). This Jungle Lodge can be aptly said as the base for travellers visiting Thekkady and to explore and experience the rich wildlife wealth of the region.

Located on the banks of the Periyar Lake, Periyar House offers its guest a vantage point to watch wildlife at close quarters in Thekkady. The hotel is occupies part of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, which is the biggest in India and one of the most fascinating wildlife reserves in the country. The region is home to some of the rare species of flora and fauna and is part of the biotic hot spots in the world.

Periyar House besides offering various options for accommodation in the avenue, deluxe and suite categories is also an ideal venue for holding incentive meetings and for holding conferences. The hotel comes with a well equipped restaurant and the guests here can also undergo ayurveda therapies. There is also a recreation room and a beer parlour at the Periyar House.

In and around Periyar House, besides the core attraction of the Periyar Lake and the wildlife sanctuary, visitors could check out nearby places of interest. Nearby locations like the plantation town of Kumily; the popular picnic spot of Pandikuzhi and the ancient Mangala Devi Temple, situated atop a forested hill are worth visiting.

And those who would love to have a free run of their adrenalin may consider some of the outdoor activities here at Thekkady. Organized by the Forest Department, guests at Periyar House can opt for activities operated from the premises surrounding the property. Only KTDC properties in Thekkady have this unique advantage.

Among the activities that take place in and around Periyar House, Boating in Periyar Lake is a popular one for the visitors. This would help them to closely watch wildlife that inhabits the surrounding forests. Groups of elephant, wild boar, gaur and sambar can be seen moving along the banks, sloping down from the forest fringes to the lake. Water birds, perched on tree stumps with their wings spread, present a delightful sight during the course of boating in the Periyar Lake.

Nature walk and Green walk is another option for the guests, which is a three hour daytime trekking in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Also available are activities like Bamboo Rafting, which is a full-day rafting and trekking programme managed by the local tribal community; Border hiking - a full-day trekking programme to the borders of the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary; Three hour Jungle Patrol, which is a night-time trekking programme inside the wildlife sanctuary; Windy Walk - a predominantly open area, full-day trekking programme inside the sanctuary through grasslands and shola forests; Cloud's Walk - a full-day trekking through the borders of the forest and plantations which offers panoramic views of the landscape and Range Scan, which is a trekking programme through inter-State forest boundary, predominantly mountainous with higher probability of viewing wildlife.

And some of the activities that fall outside the property include Bullock cart discovery, which is a three hour ride in a bullock cart, outside the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary; Plantation tours to spice, coffee and tea plantations; Visits to tea factories and tribal settlements and Shopping at Kumily for spices and minor forest produce.
