Munroe Island- A Rhythm in Green

Hidden in this big, wide world of ours, are small slices of heaven.

Munroe Island cradled by the Ashtamudi Lake and the Kallada River, is one such chunk of bliss.

Named after the erstwhile Diwan of Travancore, Colonel Munroe, the island is an amalgam of eight small islands. Munroe is credited for integrating several backwater regions by digging canals. The discovery of Stone-Age tools and megaliths are proof to the antiquity of this island, which is also home to a quaint little village.

An entire world in itself, cruising into the threshold of Munroe Island will teleport you into an experience that you never knew existed and evoke feelings you will never be able to dissect and explain.

Blissfully unaffected by the hustle bustle of the outside world, here life drifts along at the calm, peaceful pace of the emerald backwaters that not only surround it, but also crisscross the entire network of islands. The country craft cruise conducted by the Kollam District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) brings you to intimate quarters with the serene village life on the island. This village backwater tour has even received international acclaim in the magazine ‘Lonely Planet’.

The canals that link the entire Munroe Island are so narrow that they offer not just a view of a typical backwater village of Kerala but also let you experience it in a sense. The anganavadis (village playschool), fish farms, manufacturing units of coir and country crafts etc. make the Munroe Island an ideal embodiment of sustainable development. The main means of living here include farming and coir making.

If you are on the lookout for a break from the hectic pace of life, Munroe Island has just got to be your first stop.

And when you get there, take a deep breath and surrender to the greenery that engulfs you.
