Kollengode House - A Celebration of Art, Architecture and History

Snuggled in the cultural capital of God’s Own Country is yet another splendid testimony to the regal opulence and cultural heritage of Kerala, the Kollangode House.

Kerala is known for its kings, kingdoms and the prosperous empires that the royals built on this land.  The Kollengode House is one among those grandiose marvels that have withstood the test of time.

A historic walk through this majestic house situated in Thrissur district is one of those rare experiences in life that will linger on long after you have left the place. If you love art, architecture and history then this majestic structure is sure to win you over.

This palace, known as ‘Kollengode House’ was built in 1904 by Vasudeva Raja of Kollengode dynasty for his daughter. Kollengode, was the seat of Vengandu Swaroopam, known by the name Vengandu Nambidi’s, they were the rulers of eastern side of Palakkad. It was Mysore’s king Hyder Ali gave them the title of ‘Raja’.  

Currently the Kollengode House in Thrissur serves as the District Heritage Museum. It is a treasure house of some of the most unique and exquisite mural paintings, artifacts from the megalithic age and a folklore museum. The unique style of Kerala and Western architecture blend to give life to this royal edifice.  

The folklore section is designed with an array of tribal belongings, costumes of tribal artforms, models, ancient kitchen utensils and so forth creating an exceptional ambience. 

Set in a sprawling garden dotted with mango trees and vibrant flora, the House itself is a wonderful exhibit for Kerala’s traditional architecture. The rich history, geography, arts and culture of Thrissur have found their place as relief sculptures on the Heritage Wall that borders the House. This wall with its exclusive and excellent historic displays such as the Machattu Mamangam, one of the major festivals of the district, the history of Arnos Pathiri, Anjuvilakku, a remanant of the European era, and Muziris, the old urban seaport makes it a main attraction of the Palace.
